How to give your child a “Happy Birthday”

One of my neighbors, an orthopedic surgeon, has a wonderful family tradition. He takes the day off for his kids birthday! What a great birthday present!!!

All research shows that kids of all ages want more time with their parents. Even those who don’t act like the could stand another moment in the presence of their folks, when asked, admit they would like to spend more time with their family. And they want more than just time; they want eye to eye contact, a pat on the back, a feeling that they are important in their parents lives.

Many employers offer “personal days” off with pay. In that case it is a free gift and like many free things it will be the one a child will savor most, and one they will remember all their lives. We all hear lots of talk about building pleasant memories; well, here is your chance!

It doesn’t make much difference what you do that day, breakfast out, lunch with them at school, a hike or bike ride after school, any time is good time. I wouldn’t think that a movie or other parallel activity would be very good; movies are fine but they don’t allow the one on one that kids want or the eye contact, or the ability to just talk about things that interest the kid.

So for your next child’s birthday take the day off! Your whole family will thank you!

And thank you, neighbor, for your wonderful lesson for celebrating birthdays!!!
