Faith, Mental Health, and Sex Education

Wednesday morning I had the pleasure of talking with the mental health workers at the Babb Center in Hendersonville. This is a faith based counseling center organized and sponsored by the local Baptist church. They see over 700 clients every week, 30% kids.

I was so pleased they asked me to talk with their counseling staff. These men and women work hand in hand with physicians, especially pediatricians. Without them we physicains would be much less effective. I am sorry I never practice in Hendersonville and never had the opportunity to have them help me with patients who had difficult psychological problems.

I am also pleased they are faith based. I have said in my book that to try to parent without relying on faith in God is very difficult if not impossible. The fellowship of faith sharing friends is an additional bonus.

Many of the staff were familiar with Messengers in Denim and some of them were already using it in their work. That is the biggest compliment any one could pay to Messengers.  I thank them so much!

They asked some difficult questions; some I couldn’t answer! “Why is it so difficult for parents to talk with their kids about sex?” I gave some of the standard answers and a couple of my own explanations, but did not feel I adequately answered that question.

Fortunately,  yesterday I came across a great parent website and had the opportunity to discuss the author’s work with him on line. Mike Domitrz’s site: http://www.datesafeproject.org/.
Go there, study the site, and after you finish reading Messengers in Denim, read his book May I Kiss You?  Or, HELP! My Teen is Dating. Real Solutions to Tough Conversations. This is an award-wining DVD & Book Set. Read them and watch his DVD’s, you’ll learn more than I could ever teach you.

I am anxious to read everything he has written. Then I will pass them on to the Babb center!
