Some argue that teaching character traits in public schools is teaching religion and therefore forbidden by the Constitution. But, I argue that teaching right from wrong is not establishing a religion. It is showing kids how to live in a civilized society. A community sophisticated enough to allow all of its citizens to exercise their God given, inalienable rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. It is character which allows us to live in peace with ourselves, our neighbors and other nations. Until we establish that society we will have to live with school shootings, rape, theft, murder, arson and all of the other consequences of a culture unbridled by civilization. Work to make our society a genuine civilized culture with character.
