Pediatrician to host parenting talk show

That’s  the headline of a recent press release from Catholic Media Productions. And, it’s my pleasure to tell you it’s my show! It’s also what’s kept me busy all summer. It’s also one of the best non-paying jobs I’ve ever had.

The shows are pre-recorded as the station does not yet have a studio. We have 8 shows “in the can” so we can now relax a bit. Hopefully not so much that we get up against a time line.

The best way for me to tell you about the show is to copy the release below; so here it is. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts. Also let me know if there is something you would like to hear discussed on a show. We will have a guest expert on each show so you won’t have to listen to me drone on alone.

Pediatrician to host parenting talk show

Program promises to help parents raise kids with character

August 29, 2018, Nashville, Tennessee

Talk radio will soon get better, a whole lot better, and more meaningful, when Parnell Donahue, M.D. hosts his new show, Parenting Matters at noon September 10, 2018,   on WBOU 100.5 FM and streaming at WBOU.ORG.

Earlier this year John Bosio, president of Nashville Catholic Radio, asked Dr. Par, as he likes to be called, to consider hosting a radio show on parenting. After discussion with his wife and officials at the station Par agreed to volunteer for the task.

The series has three main goals. 1) Supporting parents as the primary and most important teachers of their children. 2) Emphasizing religion as fundamental in raising children of integrity directed by a strong moral compass. 3) Offering parents a path leading their kids to be men and women of character.

Dr. Par jokes that parenting is more than changing diapers and taxiing kids to soccer practice. Parenting is about raising kids to become men and women of Character. Some of the area he will address include, defining what parenting really is, and what role religion, prayer and discipline have in the process. Other topics include cell phones, peers, education, music, violence, diet, health habits, drugs, alcohol, sex, and on and on. There will be plenty of topics and suggestions that can make a parent’s job easier and more productive.

Each show will be half an hour and begin with a short monologue by our host. This will be followed with comments by, and an interview with, a special guest expert. Our great city is blessed with experts on many subjects and we will make good use of them. The second half of the show will feature a panel discussion with a local couple, interested in the subject; our expert; and our host, Dr. Par.

Each show ends with assigned “Homework” and an invitation to go to this web page, www.parentingwithdrpar.com, submit the homework, and comment on the show. “There’ll be no tests, and no grades,” Par jests. On the web site readers can also ask questions, suggest topics for future shows, and volunteer to be a participant on the show.

Although Parenting Matters is sponsored by the Diocese of Nashville, Donahue believes that all parents are interested in raising kids to become men and women of character.

The show will open on WBOU, 100.5 FM, at noon, Central time, Monday, Sept 10, 2018. Two shows will run back to back and be repeated Saturday at 11 AM, and Sunday evening at 6:00.

If these times are not convenient families can listen to a Pod-cast on Par’s web site, www.parentingwithdrpar.com anytime night or day! Those not living in Nashville, can stream the show at WBOU.Org or Nashville Catholic Radio.

Dr. Parnell Donahue was born in Minnesota and earned his MD from Marquette University/ Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his pediatric residency at Wisconsin Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he also served as Chief Resident.

He served as a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corp as a general medical officer (physician); practiced pediatrics in Wisconsin and Georgia and served as a high school team physician for more than two decades.

The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 1981, presented Dr. Donahue with the “Distinguished Service Award” “For enthusiastic leadership and support in the field of interscholastic athletics”.

In 2014 the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics named him “The Senior Pediatrician of the Year”, for his writing and his work with teens and families.

His early publications include, GERMS MAKE ME SICK, A Health Handbook for Kids, 1975, and SPORTS DOCMedical Advice, Diet, Fitness Tips, and other Essential Hints for Young Athletes, 1949. Both published by Alfred A. Knopf.

In 2010 he published MESSENGERS IN DENIM: The Amazing Things Parents Can Learn from Teens followed in 2013 with TOOLS FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING.

These books are intended to help parents raise their kids to become, men and women of character. By so doing, he says, “We will be able to turn our children, our families, our country, and perhaps even our world, toward a path of love instead of hate, honesty instead of deceit, civility instead of violence, and peace instead of war.” Then he adds, “This can only be accomplished by parents with character.”

He and his wife, Mary, live in Brentwood with their dog, Frosty. Together they have raised four kids all of whom are successful professionals. While they all have Ph.D.s, two are also M.D.s and professors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Donahue is available for interview and can be reached at par.donahue@comcast.net.
