Some years ago a young man, Jim, wrote a letter to “Dear Abby”. In it he explained that his single mother had struggled, even with his help, for 17 years to support him and herself. “Then about six months ago she married a wonderful, honest, and generous man.” When Jim graduated from high school this generous man surprised him by offering to pay for his college education. “How can I thank him?” was Jim’s question for Abby. “A card just doesn’t seem adequate, and even if I spent some of the little money I earn for a gift, he has everything he could possible need. Do you have any suggestions?”
Abby suggested the best way to thank this man was to work hard in college, be a successful student and graduate. This, she said, would not only thank him, but make him proud of his gift and of Jim.
Perhaps this is the way we should look at the gifts our creator has given us. Treat these gifts as the sacred things they are. Love them, nourish them, safeguard them, preserve them, and show Him by our daily actions how much we appreciate them.
I wish all of you a very Happy (Grateful) Thanksgiving!
