I had a wonderful surprise yesterday, not a big surprise, but like other good things it came in a small package.
When our kids were in grade school we had a super, and I mean super babysitter. Yesterday she sent me a short note on face book telling me she liked my posts. I smiled like the Jack in the Box remembering the good times she brought to our home.
Patti was a god’s send. She loved the kids, and they loved her. She always brought them something to do, library books, board games from her stash, or some other treasure to share. If Patti brought it, it was special to all four kids. If Mary and I were going out for dinner, she walked them to the pizza shop and ate dinner with them. We always felt comfortable when she was with our precious little troopers! Years later they still talk affectionately about her!
Every family should have a sitter like Patti. I hope you do, and if you do, appreciate her! Let her know how valuable she is to you! Treat her well! Oh, pardon me, boys make good sitters too! Especially if you have active, inquisitive sons! That’s another thing about Patti, she could do, and did, anything boys could do and often times better. She was a strong, competitive girl who became a tremendous wife, mother, and woman. May God continue to bless her!
Why don’t we all get together and create a National Babysitter Day. Maybe it could be the first Sunday after the Fourth of July. We could celebrate the freedom that a good sitter can bring to moms and dads like the freedom Patti gave us.
I just learned from a nurse in Texas that May 10, 2014,is Babysitters Day. That’s the Saturday before Mother’s day which I think is appropriate, but I think sitters should have a weekend of their own, and a Sunday! Otherwise they will have to sit on their weekend! I’m going to contact her with the idea of changing it. Maybe you could too. Contact Barbara Baldwin RN at bbaldwin@satx.rr.com. Let’s try to make this a National effort. That reminds me, I have readers from every state except Montana, so if you have a friend in Montana, please send them this note. We don’t want to leave them out of Babysitter Day.
